Community Participation in Action: Helping John Attend Melbourne’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service
Community participation is about more than simply getting out of the house it’s about supporting people to stay connected to the moments, traditions and experiences that matter most. At Carepro Disability Services, we’re proud to help NDIS participants across Melbourne achieve meaningful goals, no matter how big or small.
For John, attending Melbourne’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service wasn’t just another outing, it was a goal that meant a great deal to him.
John wanted to experience the service from the front, where he could fully take in the atmosphere and pay his respects alongside thousands of other Australians. Knowing how important the occasion was, his Carepro support worker carefully planned the morning in advance.
A few days before the event, they travelled to the Shrine together to familiarise themselves with transport, parking, accessibility, and the best route to the service. This planning helped ensure the day would run smoothly and allowed John to feel relaxed and confident before the early morning start.
On ANZAC Day, they arrived well before sunrise to secure a prime viewing position. Thanks to that preparation, John was able to experience the Dawn Service exactly as he had hoped.
Sometimes, quality disability support isn’t about doing extraordinary things, it’s about making meaningful experiences possible.
For John, this was one of those moments.
Supporting Individual Goals
Every person has different goals, interests and routines. For some participants, that might mean learning new skills at home. For others, it means staying connected with their local community and continuing traditions that are important to them.
At Carepro, we believe the best support starts by listening.
Rather than assuming what someone needs, our support workers take the time to understand what matters most to each participant and work alongside them to make those goals achievable.
For John, that meant careful planning, reliable support and someone by his side who understood just how important the day was.
Community Participation Through the NDIS
Community participation is an important part of many NDIS plans. It helps participants build confidence, maintain independence and stay connected with their local community.
Meaningful participation looks different for everyone. It could involve attending cultural events, visiting local attractions, enjoying hobbies, volunteering, catching up with friends, or simply getting out and enjoying everything Melbourne has to offer.
For John, community participation meant honouring a tradition that held personal significance and being part of a national day of remembrance.
These experiences contribute not only to independence but also to confidence, wellbeing and a greater sense of belonging.
