NDIS Invests $13.8 Million in Groundbreaking Early Intervention Program for Babies Showing Signs of Autism

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is making strides in early intervention, with a $13.8 million investment in the innovative Inklings program. Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten, and WA (Western Australia) Minister for Health, Amber-Jade Sanderson, recently visited Inklings, a program tailored for babies aged 6-18 months exhibiting early signs of differences in social and communication skills.

Partnering with Telethon Kids, Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS), and WA Country Health Service, Inklings aims to support 700 families across Western Australia over three years. Backed by world-leading research, early evidence suggests that timely intervention can yield improved outcomes for infants and families.

Minister Shorten expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its alignment with NDIS Review recommendations for early supports and child development checks. He emphasized the government's commitment to innovation and ensuring effective utilization of resources, mentioning recent initiatives such as the Provider Registration Taskforce and measures against fraud.

"Inklings allows parents and carers to engage early with the guidance of trained practitioners, empowering them to build on their strengths as responsive communication partners for their babies," stated Minister Shorten.

The program's success stories, like the positive impact on Addie's communication, underscore the significance of early engagement. Inklings reflects the NDIA's dedication to providing optimal support for children with autism, incorporating best research and practice to enhance outcomes. Minister Shorten concluded by affirming the government's broader aim to support all Australians with disabilities effectively.

The Inklings program signifies a progressive step in Australia's commitment to early intervention, laying the foundation for improved developmental outcomes for infants and increased support for families.
