A Comprehensive Guide to NDIS Support Categories

The NDIS is a government-funded scheme that provides financial assistance and support to people with disabilities in Australia. It aims to help people with disabilities to achieve their goals and aspirations, and to live as independently as possible. The NDIS support categories are:

Core Supports

Core supports are the day-to-day expenses that are necessary for a person with a disability to participate in their community and live an ordinary life. They include things like assistance with daily living, such as personal care, help with shopping and cooking, and support to attend appointments and social activities.

Assistance with daily living

This category of support includes assistance with things like:
  • Personal care, such as help with showering, dressing, and grooming.

  • Help with domestic tasks, such as cleaning, laundry, and ironing.

  • Help with shopping and meal preparation.

  • Assistance with communication, such as help with using a phone or computer.

  • Assistance with transport, such as help with getting to appointments and social activities.

Capital Supports

Capital supports are one-off expenses that are necessary for a person with a disability to participate in their community and live an ordinary life. They include things like equipment, home modifications, and vehicle modifications.

Equipment :

This category of support includes things like:
  • Mobility equipment, such as wheelchairs and walking aids.

  • Communication equipment, such as computer software and special keyboards.

  • Home modifications equipment, such as ramps and stairlifts.

Home modifications :

This category of support includes things like:
  • Building a ramp or installing a stairlift.

  • Widening doorways or installing handrails.

  • Modifying bathrooms or kitchens to make them more accessible.

Vehicle modifications :

This category of support includes things like:
  • Installing a wheelchair lift or ramp.

  • Modifying the controls of a vehicle to make them more accessible.

  • Installing a hoist or other equipment to assist with transferring in and out of a vehicle.

It's important to note that the NDIS support categories and the specific support available under each category can vary depending on the individual needs and circumstances of the person with a disability. The NDIS will assess each person's support needs and develop a plan that is tailored to their individual circumstances. The NDIS also has a number of other supports available, such as capacity building support, to help people with disabilities to build the skills and confidence they need to live more independently.
It’s important to work with a NDIS planner to understand the support categories that are available and what they can provide to you. This will help you to make the most of your NDIS plan and achieve your goals.

Capacity Building Supports

Capacity Building Supports help build your independence and skills to help you pursue your goals. Unlike your Core Supports budget, your Capacity Building Supports budget cannot be moved from one support category to another. Funding can only be used to purchase approved individual supports that fall within that Capacity Building category. The Capacity Building categories are:
Support Coordination This is a fixed amount for a Support Coordinator to help you use your plan.
Improved Living Arrangements
Support to help you find and maintain an appropriate place to live.
Increased Social & Community Participation Development and training to increase your skills so you can participate in community, social and recreational activities. Finding & keeping a job This may include employment-related support, training and assessments that help you find and keep a job, such as the school leaver employment supports. Improved Relationships This support will help you develop positive behaviours and interact with others. Improved Health & wellbeing Including exercise or diet advice to manage the impact of your disability. The NDIS does not fund gym memberships. Improved learning Examples include training, advice and help for you to move from school to further education, such as university or TAFE. Improved life choices Plan management to help you manage your plan, funding and paying for services. Improved daily living Assessment, training or therapy to help increase your skills, independence and community participation. These services can be delivered in groups or individually.
